Abstract
The spectrum of core levels in adsorbates is calculated taking into ac count the transfer of screening charge to the adsorbate. An exact nume rical solution for a model including this effect is obtained. The posi tion of the main peak and the overall shape of the spectrum are found to depend strongly on the width and position of the unoccupied adsorba te valence level.
