We have studied electronic excited states in films of poly(p-phenylene
vinylene) using picosecond transient and cw photomodulation, photolumi
nescence, and their excitation spectra, as well as electroabsorption s
pectroscopy. We have determined all the important energy levels of sin
glet excitons with odd and even parity, the onset of the continuum ban
d, the two-electron (biexciton) states, and the two relevant triplet s
tates, and show that good agreement exists with models involving elect
ron correlation.
