Butyl rubber was pyrolysed under an inert atmosphere in a furnace-type
pyrolyser at 400 degrees C. The pyrolysate was trapped cryogenically
and analysed by GC, GC/MS and GC/FTIR. Based on these data, a mechanis
m for the thermal degradation of butyl rubber is proposed. The effect
of temperature on the reative yields of the major decomposition produc
ts was also studied.
