Je. Alexander et Kj. Sufka, CEREBRAL LATERALIZATION IN HOMOSEXUAL MALES - A PRELIMINARY EEG INVESTIGATION, International journal of psychophysiology, 15(3), 1993, pp. 269-274
A preliminary investigation was conducted to determine whether hemisph
eric patterns of electrophysiological activation in male homosexuals d
iffer from that of male and female heterosexuals. Electroencephalograp
hic (EEG) activity was recorded over left and right cerebral hemispher
ic locations while subjects performed verbal and spatial cognitive tas
ks. Male homosexuals demonstrated different patterns of alpha power co
mpared to heterosexual males and females during baseline recording. Di
fferent hemispheric patterns of alpha activity also were observed betw
een homosexual and heterosexual males during affective judgments of bo
th verbal and spatial stimuli, but not between homosexual males and he
terosexual females. These results provide further evidence of biologic
ally-mediated functional differences between homosexuals and heterosex
uals.
