D. Drakakissmith et al., SINGAPORE - REVERSING THE DEMOGRAPHIC-TRANSITION TO MEET LABOR NEEDS, Scottish Geographical Magazine, 109(3), 1993, pp. 152-163
Concern about the quantity and quality of its labour force has been on
e of the major factors in bringing about a reversal of Singapore's pop
ulation policy from anti-natal to pro-natal. In addition, the new poli
cy has sought to enhance the qualify of the workforce by offering ince
ntives to encourage larger families amongst the more educated Singapor
eans. After five years, responses have been muted, partly because of a
growing sense of resentment amongst the younger adults towards interf
erence in what are regarded as family decisions.
