A historical overview of the theoretical conceptualisation of the init
ial interview is followed by a critical discussion of the ''scenic mod
el'' (Lorenzer, Argelander, Eckstaedt) and the diagnostic approach. Th
e author presents some reflexions based on concepts of Lacan and tries
to develop a concept of the initial interview, which focusses the pot
ential of introducing the psychoanalytic process and the work of the u
nconscious.
