The joint toxicity of some ethyleneamines to Selenastrum capricornutum
, Daphnia magna, and Poecilia reticulata have been determined as a con
tribution to the environmental risk assessment of wastewater discharge
s. A few combinations showed antagonistic or synergistic effects, but
the majority of combinations were additive at the lethal level. Thus a
dditivity appears to be a reasonable assumption for risk assessment pu
rposes of wastewater discharges. The design of tests and the biometric
al approach using models describing isobolograms to evaluate test resu
lts are described in detail. This method and subsequent statistical ev
aluation procedure were found to be very suitable to determine additiv
ity in aquatic toxicity tests.
