Greater network flexibility, combined with automation of network manag
ement, is demanded by today's network operators, who are under pressur
e to improve quality and reduce tariffs in a fast-changing telecommuni
cations environment. Thus the embedded software systems in SDH network
elements need to be more extensive and comprehensive than in earlier
generations of transport equipment. To create a software platform that
can be applied efficiently across the whole product family is a chall
enge, to which the object oriented approach offers a good answer. The
OO principles and characteristics are described. The support environme
nt, defense, and implementation aspects are discussed.
