Abstract
This paper reports a study of the ways in which teachers' thinking and classroom practice are influenced by innovations that are imposed by government. The particular focus of this paper is English teachers' re sponses to the Standard Assessment Tasks (SATs) for 14-year-olds in En gland and Wales, which were set for the first time in June 1993.
