We report on nine cases of notalgia paresthetica, a cutaneous conditio
n that has rarely been described in the dermatological literature and
is characterized by localized pruritus, burning and hyperesthesia and/
or paresthesia on the back. Histological and immunohistochemical studi
es have not clarified the pathogenesis of this disease. Several factor
s might be involved in various cases, including increased cutaneous in
nervation and neuropathy. The so-called posterior pigmented pruritic p
atch and macular amyloidosis may be considered as progressive evolutio
nal stages of notalgia paresthetica.
