Swelling of hydrocellulose is studied in binary mixtures containing me
thylmorpholine-N-oxide (MMNO) and aprotic and proton-containing diluen
ts, viz., dimethylformamide and methanol. From the values of the equil
ibrium degree of swelling of the polymer, the interaction parameters c
hi1 of the cellulose-aminooxide mixture have been calculated. The valu
e of chi1 for MMNO monohydrate was equal to 0.5. For anhydrous MMNO, t
he value of chi1 was significantly less than 0.35-0.40. Application of
aprotic solvents as a second component is more suitable (in the therm
odynamic sense) than proton-containing solvents.
