Abstract
Biologists have long been guided by the reductionist trend toward smal ler systems but are now facing an almost opposite, theoretical trend t oward complex, overall systems. A perspective on these trends emerges from the field of urinary acidification that has evolved through itera tive patterns of study at ever smaller scales.
