Abstract
The most relevant theories on the sex-dependent longevity at populatio n level are critically re-examined in the light of the knowledge avail able today on the aging process at cellular and molecular level. The a im of this perspective is to help in the understanding of the cellular and molecular bases of longevity and to indicate the most suitable bi ological models of investigation.
