Abstract
A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method has been developed to detect the raspberry root rot fungus Phytophthora fragariae var. rubi. Primer s were designed to amplify a highly repetitive fragment containing the ribosomal ssu rRNA gene. The procedure is specific for the detection of P. fragariae var. rubi and the closely related strawberry red core pathogen P. fragariae var. fragariae. With the PCR procedure, P. fraga riae var. rubi could be detected in slightly to severely affected rasp berry roots.
