The energy loss straggling of swift C-12 and O-16 ions at energies fro
m 0.5 to 1.5 MeV/amu passing through C foils has been measured. The in
homogeneity of the foils, which is the most significant experimental e
rror in determining the energy straggling for solid targets, was studi
ed with a high resolution scanning electron microscope (SEM) and a sca
nning tunnelling microscope (STM). Comparison between the empirical fo
rmula for energy straggling and the present measurements has been made
to verify the reliability of the formula.
