A nationwide investigation was carried out involving about 6000 studen
ts with the aim of collecting data on student appraisal of the teachin
g of physics in Italian secondary schools (age 14-19). The analytical
techniques employed are described and the main conclusions which can b
e drawn by comparing the ratings by different categories of students a
nd the correlation with different ways of teaching physics are summari
zed.
