Solutions of acetonitrile (1) in tetrachloromethane and deuteratred so
lvents (S) (benzene, acetonitrile, acetone and dimethylsulphoxide) hav
e been studied by IR absorption spectra. The observed solvent effect o
n the IR spectrum of I was explained in terms of the existence of comp
lexes with hydrogen bonding of the type N-C-CH3...solvent (S). The str
ength of the hydrogen bonding was characterized by enthalpies of speci
fic interactions of I with solvents DELTAH(int)I/S(sp). The values DEL
TAH(int)I/S(sp) were determined both by IR spectroscopy and calorimetr
y and were found to be within the range 0.3-1.5 kcal mol-1.
