Streptococcus ''milleri'' group is a relatively unrecognized bacteria
by reason of properties of this group and resulting taxonomic confusio
n. This group includes beta-hemolytic streptococci with different Lanc
efield antigens, alpha or non hemolytic streptococci, microaerophilic
streptococci or peptostreptococci. It is a commensal of the oropharynx
, bowel, and genitourinary tract. Alone or in association, it has been
implicated as a causative agent, in many types of severe infections a
nd specially in purulent infections. In our laboratory, it was isolate
d in 63 cases during 1990 : from cutaneous or soft tissues samples (15
strains), from osteo-articular system (10), from vagina (7), from per
itoneal fluids (5), from blood cultures (4), the remainder from variou
s samples including 2 isolate from urines with bacteriological signs o
f infection. All strains were susceptible to penicillins and glycopept
ides and showed low level resistance to aminoglycosides. With regard t
o macrolides, lincosamides and synergistins (MLS), about 30 % of strai
ns showed a MLSB type resistance. The activities of other molecules we
re variable depending to the strain.
