In rat liver injured by carbon tetrachloride, ED-1-positive monocytes
and resident macrophages significantly increased in number in damaged
perivenular zones on days 2 and 4 after single or double dosing, peaki
ng on day 2 and being two-fold more after the 2nd dosing. ED-2-positiv
e resident macrophages significantly increased in number only on day 4
after the single dosing and on days 2, 4 and 6 after the 2nd dosing w
ith a peak on day 2. A significant increase in number of muscle actin-
positive perisinusoidal cells was seen on day 4 and on days 2 and 4 af
ter the Ist and 2nd dosings, respectively, reaching a peak on day 4 an
d being more remarkable after the 2nd dosing.
