Palladium and molybdenum were deposited onto a continuous layer of Al2
O3 covering a tungsten field emitter. The adsorption of CO at 300 K on
such a model system shows unexpected increase in the electron emissio
n from both metals. This effect can either be understood in terms of a
resonance enhancement of electron tunneling, or it can result from sp
ecific interactions of CO with supported clusters as compared to CO in
teraction with bulk metals. Coadsorption of CO and 112 on the mixed mo
lybdenum and palladium surface exhibits features different from coadso
rption on the individual metals.
