Using pure chemical reagents and varying the chloride content 0-8% (w/
w) a series of nine compositions were prepared at 1100-degrees-C and i
nvestigated in respect of the chloride effect on the phases formed. Th
e formation of beta-C2S, free lime (CaO(f)) and some gamma-C2S were fo
und by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis, whilst in the presence of chl
orides the Alinite phase is also formed. The chloride ions significant
ly promote the Alinite phase formation, improving thus, the burnabilit
y of the raw mix. They also bring about a remarkable decrease of the c
rystal size of the formed Alinite phase. The results suggest an optimu
m amount of chlorides in the range of 2-3% in the burnt material, in o
rder the Alinite phase to be formed.
