Abstract
The manner in which the kinetic parameters for the reactions of ionic pair formation involving ortho-substituted phenols vary with the proto n affinity of a counterpart indicates that intermediate complexes are formed in the first stage. The existence of weak stable complexes with bifurcated hydrogen bonds, which act as such intermediates during pro ton transfer, was proved to be possible.
