The mechanism of a new catalytic reaction of acetylene hydroiodination
in the Pt(IV)-NaI-H+-H2O system is studied at 353 K. It is found that
the rapid and reversible C2H2 fixation via iodoplatination of multipl
e bonds of HC=CH and Pt(IV)CH=CHI occurs at this temperature. Vinyliod
ide is produced through successive reduction of the product of iodopla
tination of acetylene by iodide ions, the beta-iodovinyl complex of Pt
(IV), and protolysis of beta-iodovinyl derivatives of Pt(II). Protolys
is competes with the reaction of beta-elimination, leading to acetylen
e regeneration.
