The optical anisotropy of a laser plasma has been studied experimental
ly for the first time. At pump intensities approximately 5 x 10(14) W/
cm2, the optical anisotropy in the region of the plasma with electron
densities to approximately 2 X 10(20) cm-3 is governed by spontaneous
magnetic fields. Gradients of the electron density have no significant
effect on the plasma anisotropy.
