Ml. Smith et al., LONGITUDINAL INVESTIGATION OF NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL FUNCTIONING IN CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS WITH HEMOPHILIA AND HIV-INFECTION, Developmental neuropsychology, 13(1), 1997, pp. 69-85
Neuropsychological performance was examined in a 3-year longitudinal i
nvestigation of children and adolescents with hemophilia and HIV infec
tion, a comparable group of hemophiliacs without HIV, and a sibling co
ntrol group. All groups had lower academic achievement than expected b
ased on levels of intelligence. No systematic differences related to H
IV status were found, and performance by the group with HIV did not wo
rsen over time. The findings suggest that children and adolescents wit
h HIV, but not AIDS, do not show a progressive pattern of neuropsychol
ogical impairment.
