In. Elnikov, THE SYSTEM BREAKING OF AN ACOUSTICS BASEM ENT AND THE STRUCTURE OF SEDIMENTS IN THE VAVILOV HOLLOW (TYRRHENIAN SEA), Okeanologia, 33(6), 1993, pp. 924-929
Multichannel seismic profiling was carried out in 25 x 25 miles area i
n the 11-th cruise of r/v ''Rift'' (1987) in the Vavilov Hollow. More
than 400 miles were covered with profiles. Maps of bathymetry, sedimen
t layer power and acoustics basement relief were made. The system brea
kings of submeridian and sublatitude directions were discovered. The s
urface of an acoustics basement is divided by breakings into microbloc
ks 5 - 10 x 20 km. Blocks are located 2 - 3 km apart in sublatitude di
rection. The surface of blocks in most cases is covered by sediments.
The maximum power of sediments is found on boundaries of microblocks.
A conclusion is made that the bottom of the Vavilov Hollow was lowered
3.5 million years ago as a result of tension of the lithosphere plate
.
