An experimental methodology was developed to evaluate the physicochemi
cal basis for in vitro-in vivo correlations in iontophoretic delivery
situations. This experimental methodology can be used to quantitativel
y evaluate the extent of interaction between chemical permeation enhan
cers and iontophoresis for drug delivery. The inherent advantages of u
sing Ag/AgCl electrodes are fully exploited to control pH and minimize
depletion of permeant during prolonged periods of iontophoresis.
