This article compares wage inequality between male and female employee
s in the metal manufacturing sector in Finland. The results show that
a female employee earns nearly the same wage for the same kind of work
as a male employee of the same age. Discrimination on the labour mark
et, however, still exists. Discrimination occurs through the segmentat
ion of the labour market into female jobs and male jobs and when valui
ng different types of work. A decentralisation of wage bargaining will
, according to the author, most likely increase wage inequality betwee
n male and female workers.
