The article deals with changes in the earnings structure, and factors
affecting these trends, during the 1980s in Finnish industry. The main
features were a reduction in the number of employees and thus an incr
ease in the workers' average age. At the same time young persons enter
ing the labour market were on average better educated. The baby-boom g
eneration (born in the 1940s) experienced an increase in their relativ
e wage compared to younger employees. Thus, the return earned on schoo
ling has decreased.
