Basic densities and wood chemistry of 12 second-growth lodgepole pine
trees from four sites in western Canada have been determined. Juvenile
(core) wood was less dense, and had higher extractives, one-percent c
austic solubilities and lignin, but lower moisture contents than did m
ature wood. Contents of individual and total sugars were similar for j
uvenile and mature wood. Properties of top wood - typical of thinnings
- were compared with those of juvenile wood.
