The constant blaze angle that is an attribute of blazed, ruled, concav
e diffraction gratings gives rise to a passband encompassing a range o
f wavelengths that depends on the grating parameters. Adding a multila
yer coating designed for a wavelength within the passband restricts th
e passband approximately to that wavelength plus or minus the width of
the multilayer rocking curve, which can be much smaller than the pass
band of the uncoated grating.
