In the evaluation of a hepatic mass lesion, imaging techniques are of
considerable importance, though the final diagnosis is established by
histopathological examination. Radical surgery is still the best treat
ment for a primary malignant hepatic neoplasm and the surgeon should s
upplied in advance with all the information needed for planning the op
eration. Sonography is now the first diagnostic procedure per formed,
quite often followed by MRI as the only supplementary modality. Scinti
graphy and angiography have been largely superseded; they are performe
d in carefully selected individual cases. CT is an alternative to MRI.
