After having listed the requirements raised against modern anthelminti
cs the author reviewed the available modern (Table 1) and conventional
preparations (Table 2) used in Hungary for controlling the helminthos
es of dogs and cats together with their effective agents, doses, appli
cations and manufacturers. Thereafter, their application has been deta
iled according to animal species (Tables 3 and 4), age of animals, lif
e-cycle of helminths and considering the possibilities of reinfection.
Importance of combined preparations has been outlined in the treatmen
t of mixed infections. It has been pointed out that veterinarian shoul
d systematically call the attention of owners for the danger of parasi
to-zoonoses caused by certain helminths (Ascarididae, Ancylostomatidae
) and about the possibility that dams, puppies and kittens can be trea
ted preventively to avoid the contamination of environment with eggs.
