The critical analysis of the interaction between polyacetylene and oxi
dizing and nonoxidizing protic acids is presented. Polyacetylene as we
ll as its composites with polyvinylbutyral were used in the experiment
s. Polyacetylene in such composites was previously shown to have a low
concentration of imperfection. The investigations pursued showed the
same character of interaction of oxidizing protic acids with both poly
acetylene and its composites; this interaction corresponds to the clas
sical doping process. Interaction of polyacetylene composites with non
oxidizing protic acids results in cis-trans-isomerization only and is
not related to doping of polyacetylene. It is suggested that the key f
actor defining the differences observed is the content of imperfection
in polyacetylene.
