Da. Nield et al., CONVECTION INDUCED BY INCLINED THERMAL AND SOLUTAL GRADIENTS IN A SHALLOW HORIZONTAL LAYER OF A POROUS-MEDIUM, Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 257, 1993, pp. 559-574
A theoretical examination is made of convection, induced by applied th
ermal and solutal gradients inclined to the vertical, in a shallow hor
izontal layer of a saturated porous medium. The horizontal components
of these gradients induce a Hadley circulation, which becomes unstable
when the vertical components are sufficiently large. A linear stabili
ty analysis is carried out, and calculations are made using a low-orde
r Galerkin approximation for the various modes of instability. The ori
entation of the preferred mode and the other critical quantities are d
etermined for representative parameter values.
