A. Tippe, DETERMINATION OF THE NET ELECTRIC CHARGE OF A POLYACRYLAMIDE MOLECULEBY DONNAN POTENTIAL MEASUREMENTS, Colloid and polymer science, 271(12), 1993, pp. 1152-1156
The net electric charge z(p) of a polyacrylamide molecule (Praestol, M
ol, Wt. 3.4 x 10(6)) in aqueous solution was determined for two pH val
ues (7.2 and 10.0) by measuring the Donnan e.m.f. as function of the s
olutions NaCl content c (2.7 mM < c < 74 mM). Taking into account a no
n-ideal behavior of the counterions (Na+) mobility, the numerical valu
es of z(p) turned out to be 3100 and 5500 electric charge units for pH
= 7.2 and 10.0, respectively. A measurable contribution of the assume
d non-ideal model for the Na+ ions is found for c < 15 mM.
