A diffusion equation is derived for the energy distribution of a gas o
f noninteracting point particles following chaotic trajectories inside
a slowly-time-dependent container. We discuss the relevance of this p
roblem to results concerning ergodic adiabatic Hamiltonian systems, as
well as to one-body dissipation in nuclear dynamics.
