Abstract
Ionic ferrofluids of MnFe2O4, gamma-Fe2O3, and CoFe2O4 has been invest igated by means of optical- and x-ray-scattering techniques. The optic al birefringence measured as a function of temperature, without any ma gnetic field, showed the existence of a nematic-type order in these ma terials. Scattering results indicate the existence of bundlelike aggre gates in Mn samples. The origin of the birefringence is discussed in t erms of the shape anisotropy of the magnetic particles.
