Ionic transport in electrolytic conductivity has been considered in te
rms of the dynamic frictional formalism of nonequilibrium thermodynami
cs. The treatment includes multicomponent electrolyte mixtures and sol
utions containing polyelectrolytes and colloids. It is shown that the
dissipation function for the process can be split into two terms chara
cterising interionic friction and ion-solvent friction, respectively.
The corresponding friction coefficients are well-defined and experimen
tally determinable. They have been evaluated for a number of binary el
ectrolytes from electrolytic conductivity data found in the literature
. For 1:1 electrolytes the reduced interionic friction coefficients va
ry slightly and in a regular fashion with concentration. For higher va
lency type electrolytes deviations from this behaviour occur, which in
general can be explained by ionic association.
