A brief review of the efforts of the authors at investigating the effe
ct of high-intensity radiation on interacting atomic systems is presen
ted. It is concluded that high-power optical radiation drastically alt
ers the dynamics of atomic collisions and the character of nonlinear o
ptical effects in systems of colliding atoms. The results of recent wo
rk devoted to an investigation of the interaction of atoms with the su
rface of solids are described. The results of experimental investigati
ons of the newly discovered phenomenon of the photoremoval of atoms fr
om the surface of a metal are described.
