Emission spectra excited in the exciton forming absorption region (1.4
2-1.71 eV) of trans-polyacetylene have been obtained at room temperatu
re, 77 K and 4.2 K. The overtones and combinations of fundamentals are
remarkably enhanced only when they overlap with the near-infrared lum
inescence peaking at 1.24 eV. These facts suggest the similarity betwe
en trans- and cis-(CH)x in optical and photoelectric responses at leas
t near their respective intrinsic absorption characterized by the trip
let vibronic structure.
