A new distance sensor utilizing a stepwise domain wall propagation cau
sed by a pulse wire current train in a twisted magnetostrictive amorph
ous wire is presented. A 1000 mm-long digital distance sensor having a
nonlinearity of 0.5 %FS and a simple construction is realized. The se
nsor characteristics are controlled with applying a torsion. The stepw
ise domain wall propagation characteristics are also anlyzed in compar
ison with those for a steady state wall propagation.
