Several new polystyrene-supported metal complexes have been synthesize
d by the reaction of a polymer-anchored ligand containing the Schiff b
ase derived from salicylaldehyde and 1-amino-2-naphthol-4-sulphonic ac
id with a metal salt or metal complex. The metal-bound polymers have t
he general formula PS-LMX(n-m).qS (where PS-L= deprotonated polymer-an
chored ligand, M = Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), Fe(III), Zn(II), Cd(II), Mo
(V), Mo(VI), Zr(IV) and U(VI), n = valency of metal ion, m = basicity
of polymer-anchored ligand and q = number of coordinated solvent molec
ule). The polymer-anchored ligand and its complexes have been characte
rized by elemental analysis, infrared, electronic and ESR spectra and
magnetic susceptibility measurements. The chelating resin forms magnet
ically dilute complexes having a geometry comparable with those of non
polymer-anchored complexes of the Schiff base. The Mo(V) complex shows
a band at 950 cm(-1) due to the v(Mo=O). The Mo(VI) complex exhibits
bands at 940 and 910 cm(-1) due to the v(sy)(O=Mo=O) and v(asy)(O=Mo=O
), respectively, indicating the presence of a cis-MoO2 structure. The
U(VI) complexes show a band at 905-910 cm(-1) due to the v(asy)(O=U=O)
indicating the presence of a trans-UO2 structure. The infrared spectr
a of the complexes suggest the dibasic tridentate ONO donor behaviour
of the polymer-anchored ligand. The complex PS-LCu DMF (DMF = dimethyl
formamide) exhibits the square planar geometry. The complexes PS-LNi.3
DMF, PS-LCo.3DMF, PS-LFeC1.2DMF, PS-LMoOCI.DMF, PS-LMoO(2).DMF, PS-LUO
(2).DMF and PS-LUO(2).DMSO have an octahedral structure, PS-LZn.DMF, P
S-LZn.DMSO, PS-LCd.DMF and PS-LCd DMSO have a tetrahedral structure an
d PS-LZr(OH)(2) 2DMSO has a pentagonal bipyramidal structure. All comp
lexes are magnetically dilute in nature.
