Embe. Souza et al., RECOMBINATION OF LAC(-)MAL(PLUS) CELLS WITH LAC(PLUS) MAL-VARIANTS ARISEN SPONTANEOUSLY FROM DIFFERENT CANDIDA-ALBICANS STRAINS, Revista de Microbiologia, 24(3), 1993, pp. 156-160
Candida albicans strains, maintained in usual culture media, formed co
lonies that, in auxonogram tests, showed an assimilation for lactose,
but not for maltose. Spheroplasts prepared from these variants and fro
m normal lac- mal+ cells of different origins were fused by the polyet
hylene glycol method. This procedure yelded only lac+ mal+ cells. Afte
r reduction in ploidy, these cells originated 82% of lac- mal+ colonie
s, 13.3% of lac- mal- and 4.4% of lac+ mal+. Ploidy of the fusion prod
uct, occurrence of heterocaryose in this product, and the loss of chro
mosomes in the course of the segregation are discussed in this paper.
