Abstract
This paper presents a tutorial introduction to the basic concepts in b ifurcation theory and continuation methods which can be applied to stu dy the voltage stability and nonlinear oscillations of power system ne tworks. Efficient computational methods of analysis of nonlinear dynam ical systems have been emerging in the literature and will be helpful not only to power engineers but also to the engineers in other fields in their study of nonlinear physical systems. This tutorial does not p resent an exhaustive survey but rather a compact text which will be he lpful for researchers intending to use bifurcation and continuation pr inciples in their study.
