Under suitable conditions, the reaction of tetra-tert-butylhexaphospha
ne, P6Bu4t (1), with cumene hydroperoxide gives rise to the correspond
ing dioxide P6Bu4tO2 (3) which could be isolated as the adduct P6Bu4tO
2 . 0.7C9H12O2. According to a complete analysis of the P-31{H-1}-NMR
spectrum compound 3 is a-tert-butyl-2,4-dioxobicyclo[3.1.0]hexaphospha
ne, in which the oxygen atoms are bonded exocyclically to the five-mem
bered phosphorus ring of 1. When the oxidation reaction proceeds a fis
sion of the bicyclic P6 skeleton takes place.
