Abstract
In this paper we investigate the influence of a gradient zone in coate d WC/Co hardmetal inserts on cracking in a linear elastic mesoscopic m odel. Therefore, special functionally graded elements have been develo ped. The crack-gradient interaction depends on the kind of the gradien t and the distance between initial cracks. A considerable effect of Co islands on cracking was observed.
