In this article we discuss the results of the testing of approximately
50 Thorn Emi 9351 phototubes used for the light detection system of t
he Counting Test Facility, prototype of the solar neutrino experiment
Borexino, presently under installation at the Gran Sasso Laboratory. T
he tests were aimed to a systematic evaluation of the spread of the ma
in characteristics of the device and to a thorough evaluation of the s
hielding effectiveness of mu-metal shields of different lengths.
