Abstract
The application of Fourier-transform laser microprobe mass spectrometr y to lichens is described. The in situ detection of a new perylene qui none in samples of the tropical species Laurera sanguinaria Malme and Graphis haematites Fee was achieved with minimal specimen preparation. The high mass resolution and mass accuracy of the instrument eliminat es the need for additional characterization of the isolated substances by high resolution electron impact mass spectrometry and direct intro duction probe.
