The luminescences of Ce3+, Eu2+, Eu3+ and Gd3+ in the compound Ba2Ln(B
O3)2Cl (Ln = Gd, Y, Lu) are reported and discussed. In Ba2Gd(BO3)2Cl t
here is energy migration over the Gd3+ sublattice. The F-7(1) level of
Eu3+ shows a very large crystal-field splitting. The Ce3+ and EU2+ em
issions have large Stokes shifts. These are discussed in terms of exis
ting models.
